Andy Potts, ARNP
At the heart of Andy Potts’s work with patients is the understanding that caring for a person’s mental and physical health - together - is the most effective path to wellbeing. Almost every care plan he develops involves the three elements of medication, counseling, and exercise, with the goal of minimizing the medication component as safely as possible. His favorite form of exercise to get people started? Walking. Even just down the block and back.
Working with patients ages 13 to 65, Andy specializes in helping people find healthy coping strategies for the transitions they face in their lives. Transitional periods often trigger anxiety and depression and can make other conditions, such as ADHD, more difficult to manage. During such times of struggle, it can be difficult for a person to care well for the whole self, so Andy helps individuals create plans using the three elements of medication, counseling, and exercise. Medication can be critical in helping a person get to a place where other approaches can be more effective, while counseling and exercise help people develop skills they can use throughout the rest of their lives.
Andy’s path to becoming an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner in mental health has been richly varied. His mom was a nursing instructor, and her career choice influenced his own. Andy has been a critical care nurse, has managed nursing informatics systems (healthcare IT), and has worked as a psychiatric in-patient nurse. His diverse experiences in healthcare and in other occupations give him perspective, expertise, and empathy to meet people where they are and to help them find their own best path toward whole health.
